Throughout its 40-year history and six generations, the BMW 3 Series has proven to be one of the most versatile cars ever built. After starting life as the successor to the legendary 2002, it has spawned countless body styles and powertrain variants, and it established the model hierarchy that defines how the German car industry still aligns itself today. It also spawned the M3; a car that proved you didn’t need something low-slung and expensive to find driving nirvana. In short, the 3 Series can be anything to anyone.
To celebrate its 40th year, BMW has released this short film documenting the experience of 3 Series owners from Las Vegas to Europe to Indonesia and examines the common threads that link all six generations. Sure, there have been some weird ones (looking at you E36 3 Series Compact), but all are immediately recognizable as a 3 Series, thanks to design queues like dual kidney grilles, quad headlights, three-box styling and the Hofmeister kink. Checkout the video and let us know which is your favorites 3 Series.
