There are a lot of ways for a carmaker to lay claim to bragging rights for a production car. It can brag about top speed, 0-to-60 times or quarter-mile times, just to name a few. But for many enthusiasts, a car’s Nurburgring lap time is all they want to know, as the 12.9-mile Nordschleife offers such a wide variety of conditions that the times offer a better idea of how well-rounded a car is. Which car holds the record for fastest street-legal production car is a matter of some debate, but a 2015 Lamborghini Aventador SV might have just done it, with a time of 6 minutes and 59.57 seconds.
The Radical SR8 and SR8 LM definitely hold the fastest two production-car lap times, but the car’s status as a road car is quite shaky. That why Porsche confidently claimed the record when a 918 Spyder clocked a 6:57, but when it was later revealed that the 918 had a nonstandard fixed roof and a stripped interior, this record was also called into question. Nissan then claimed the record time for a GT-R Nismo, and even if that record isn’t disputed, Lamborghini has beaten it. And there is of course a video to prove it.
It’s an exciting seven minutes.
