Ah, yes… the sun warms your face, the wind whips through your hair, and directly behind you, there sits about 650 charging PS (641 horsepower) from a twin-turbo V-8. Sounds like a pretty amazing combination, doesn’t it? Carlos Lago, host of Motor Trend: Ignition, certainly thinks so. He recently took McLaren’s drop-top supercar, the 2015 650S Spider out for a spin to give us the barebones truth on what it’s like to drive, and by all accounts, it seems to delight and amaze, pitting the senses in a full-frontal assault of speed and blurred scenery.

But is the 650S Spider better than its predecessor, the 12C?

In a word, yes. Absolutely, undeniably yes. The 650S Spider not only benefits from more power, but a bounty of new technology as well, like revised adaptive aerodynamics and suspension. While these attributes do wonders on the track, the 650S Spider is also quite civilized around town, offering a variety of drive modes depending on the given situation.

Okay, so it’s better than the 12C. Good to know. But this video is still worth far more than learning that little tidbit. Seeing this outrageous orange creation slither through scenic California roads and around Willow Springs International Raceway results in some lovely jolts of adrenaline and envy. As for hearing the color commentary over all the action… well, that’s just icing on the cake.
